Laughing Bird Caye National Park
Laughing Bird Caye is a 1.8 acre island located about
11 miles off the coast of Placencia in the Stann Creek District
of Belize. It is the southern-most f the islands in the
central lagoon of the Belize Barrier Reef. The caye (island)
was declared a protected area in 1981 and on December 21, 1991
it was declared a Belizian National Park called "Laughing Bird
Caye National Park". In 1996 the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve
System was inscribed on the World Heritage List. Laughing Bird
Caye is the most popular day trip out of the Belizian mainland
coastal town of Placencia. A boat and a guide will typically
cost between $40 and $100 USD depending on the vessel and
what is included in the excursion.
