Sugar Mills in the Dominican Republic

Information about historic sugar mills and the Ruta de Los Ingenos (the Route of the Sugar Mills) in the Dominican Republic. Christopher Columbus introduced sugarcane to the Dominican Republic during his second voyage, which was between 1493 and 1496.

Boca De Nugua Sugar Mill
Sugar mill complex near Santo Domingo featuring a sugar mill, aldron and furnaces, warehouse, guardhouse, and distilleries from the 18th Century and a 16th century irrigation system. This sugar mill was the site of a slave rebellion in the mid 1880's at which time tyhe property was bsurned down. It was abandoned for many years before being partially restored between 1879 and 1981.
