Most of its visiors and scuba divers and people who just
want to get away from it all. At one time Guanaja was
covered with pine trees but most of them were destroyed
by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
Town of Bonacca on Low Cay
The only significant city or town on Guanaja island
is Bonacca, a densely populated cay (island) located
about half a mile off the main Guanaja Island.
More then 6,000 people live on an island less then
100 acres in size. There are no streets, cars, scooters,
or even bicycles allowed on the island, only sidewalks
and paths for walking. Many of the homes and businesses
in Bonacca are built on stilts over the water.
